The Blue Devil
While it's off season, I thought now would be a good time for a little history/background of The Blue Devils. Starting with where they got their name. According to my source, "Tales from the Duke Blue Devil Locker Room," Duke's name "The Blue Devil's" does not have any religious meaning behind it. The Blue Devils were a French alpine fighting unit in WW1, known for their fighting spirit and courage. In 1921, the school newspaper comity began arguing that the name "Methodists" was too traditional and bland, they wanted something catchy and more distinctive, so they launched a campaign to create a new mascot for the school. After tons of submissions, the editors narrowed it down to those that best utilized the school colors, including, Blue Titans, Blue Eagles and of course, The Blue Devils. The student body in the early 1920's contained quite a bit of war veterans, who were very familiar with the Blue Devils of France. After a few years of debating, the nickname was finally adopted in 1923 by Duke university. Know known to be the home of The Blue Devil's nation wide, thanks to the class of 1923 for that one! The Blue Devil's logo is easily one of the most recognizable logos in the country. And let’s just be thankful that Duke updated the mascot costume because the old one was a little creepy to say the least. The new and improved Blue Devil is definitely badass, from the muscles to the cape, you can’t help but fall in love with this mascot. The Blue Devil represents the strength and pride of Duke University and it’s successful athletics program, and it's obvious that he is admired by many fans.
